Firstly, there’s no comprehensive list of most popular dog breeds in Ireland, so extrapolating from UK and US lists obviously has its limitations. Secondly, most of the information used to compile these lists originates from the Kennel Club (either the American one or the UK Kennel Club) and they base their figures on how many puppies of each pedigree breed that they recognise are born within a given timeframe, so there’s no account of older existing dogs, non-pedigree or non-registered dogs. Bearing in mind these big limitations, the lists are definitely better than nothing to give an indication of trends in popularity of dog breeds.

So, limitations aside, and not getting offended because your adorable mixed breed mutt isn’t included in ‘the list’, here goes:

Google compiled a list of the top 10 dog breeds that people searched online for in 2013. They are as follows:

Not a whole lot of cross-over between the top 10 googled and the top 10 most popular breeds – just four: poodle, bulldog, beagle and golden retriever. Top 10 family-friendly dog breeds

You might think small dog for small kid but in fact it’s the other way around – big or medium dogs are more robust and better suited to enthusiastic youngsters!. So you’ve got your bulldog and beagle in among the mix, and the star family-friendly dog is the Golden Retriever. Again, we’re only talking pure breeds here, but you can’t go past a trip to your local dog rescue centre to pick out a mixed breed dog in need of a loving home. Check out the top 10 here:
